Writing Process

Posted by BulletProofPoet on July 1, 2009 in Creative Writing |

This was inspired by a writer I met on a writers message board. I thought it would be interesting to see what process others follow.

While I don’t sit with a printed list of steps to perform when writing, I find that my process typically takes this form:

1: Theme / Thesis Statement (The “Big Idea”)
2: Synopsis
3: Character Bios
4: Setting
5: Outline
6: Treatment
7: First Draft, Second Etc.
8: Finished Script/Novel
9: Title

10: Log Line (If I’m showing the work)

I wonder if I’ll ever be a “real” writer, ’cause I wind up writing until it makes sense to me, with only a feel for where I’m going at the outset… I’m totally disorganized-but I am able to recognize the proper path when I stumble across it! And I can tell when I’m writing smoothly and clearly… The writers I admire most are those such as Kurt Vonnegut and Joseph Heller, who write clear and direct sentences, eshewing fancy, pretentious words rarely used in our language, such as “juxtaposition”, which was probably William Faulker’s real middle name…

  • Speaking of Kurt Vonnegut, I ordered Slaughterhouse-Five a couple weeks ago and it just occurred to me I haven’t recieved it yet. I ordered Deep Blue by David Niall Wilson a week ago and it arrived today.

I have the same pet peeve with writers trying to be too high sounding.

Absolutley love reading your site, just so you know.
I guess I’m a random writer. I’m just walking or listening to a song and then an idea will jump into my head and I have to write it down on whatever I can find. Only a few of these develop though and I keep writing until another idea apears and I have to pursue it. Probably not the best way but it means I always have something going and then I usually write better when I have time to think about it. It’s hard working out the plot though. Sometimes ideas just come but there are times where I just have to draw out a mind map and figure and whats going where :)

  • Hi Aimie. Nice to see you. You’re the Aimie from IMDB right? Anyway, the problem you have with plot is the most difficult thing to perfect even for the most skilled writers. I have written some posts on the topic that I think you will find very helpful. I’ll list them below. I had stopped receiving a lot of feedback so I didn’t know people still read this blog, or I would have finished the series. lol
